Corporate tax implementation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Firswood helps businesses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi put corporate tax records, accounting categories and review responsibilities into use. We assess the business structure and transactions, identify missing information and agree the required system changes.

What to prepare

What should your accounting process capture for corporate tax?

Set up the records during the year so the return preparer can follow the facts without rebuilding them at year end.

AreaPractical preparation
Chart of accountsUse consistent account categories and transaction descriptions, with supporting documents that explain the business purpose of material expenditure.
Owner and group transactionsIdentify the parties and retain agreements, amounts and commercial explanations so related-party questions can be reviewed.
Income and activityKeep enough detail to distinguish revenue streams and assess any proposed free-zone treatment or other relief on its facts.
Year-end responsibilitiesAssign the record owners, review points and management approvals, including dependencies on an external audit or specialist analysis where needed.

Software configuration supports the records; it does not determine tax eligibility or replace a review of the transaction.

The work can include Zoho Books, QuickBooks or Xero setup, with a separate scope for the first annual return.

Map the tax requirements to the business

We begin with the legal structure, revenue streams, accounting year and significant contracts. This identifies where the finance process needs information that may not appear in a basic profit-and-loss report: related-party dealings, owner transactions, financing, asset movements or income that needs separate analysis. The assessment follows the current rules and relevant FTA corporate tax guidance.

The result is a list of implementation decisions, evidence gaps and tasks. Each task has an owner and an agreed completion point. A business with straightforward local activity should not receive the same project as a group with several entities, cross-border arrangements or potential qualifying free-zone treatment.

Set up records that support the tax calculation

We review the chart of accounts, transaction descriptions and year-end schedules, then recommend where additional detail is needed. For example, keeping separate records for owner-related expenditure or financing arrangements makes later review easier than reconstructing the facts at filing time. We work with Zoho Books, QuickBooks and Xero and agree the specific configuration work included.

A software setting does not decide the tax treatment on its own. We connect the setup to written instructions for the team, explain when unusual transactions should be escalated and identify the source documents that must accompany them. Changes are tested against representative business transactions before the process is handed over.

Give the annual cycle clear ownership

The implementation plan establishes a recurring review routine, a year-end information list and management approval responsibilities. It also identifies dependencies on external audit, valuations or specialist analysis where relevant. The timetable is based on the business's actual period and record availability, so tasks are completed before they become urgent filing questions.

Potential reliefs and elections are flagged for assessment rather than silently built into assumptions. For a free-zone business, implementation includes understanding the conditions relevant to the intended treatment; a licence alone does not establish qualifying income. See the FTA free-zone guidance. We document the decisions and evidence needed for the annual review.

Leave the team with an operating process

The handover includes the agreed tax calendar, responsibilities, working-paper structure and open technical matters. We walk the finance team through the process and test whether the required information can actually be produced. Follow-up support can cover the first period-end review or first return, with those tasks stated explicitly. Implementation is complete when the agreed controls and records are in use, not merely when a report has been delivered.

Working with Firswood

How the work starts

  1. Assess the starting point

We map activities, records and current responsibilities to identify the practical gaps in the tax process.

  2. Design and implement

We agree the necessary controls, reporting changes and document routines, then support the specified implementation tasks.

  3. Test and hand over

We check the process against real transactions, explain the responsibilities and agree any first-year follow-up.

What affects the scope and fee?

  • Number of entities and business activities
  • Quality of existing accounting processes
  • Software and reporting changes required
  • Training, testing and first-year support

We set out the deliverables, responsibilities and fee in the proposal. Work outside that scope is discussed before it is added.

Common questions

Corporate tax implementation FAQs

How is implementation different from tax registration?

Registration establishes the tax account. Implementation prepares the records, controls and responsibilities needed to support compliance throughout the year. A business can have a registration number while still lacking the information required for its return. We assess those gaps and agree practical changes rather than treating registration as the end of preparation.

Do we need a new accounting system?

Not necessarily. We first review the system and reporting arrangements already in use. Many issues can be addressed through better account structure, transaction descriptions, document routines or review controls. If a change or migration is warranted, we explain why and define it as part of the scope before implementation begins.

Can you implement this with our internal finance team?

Yes. We agree which tasks your team will carry out and which Firswood will handle, then provide the specifications and review points needed. The project should leave your team able to operate the process. Responsibilities, training and follow-up testing are included only to the extent set out in the agreed proposal.

Is the first corporate tax return included?

Only where the proposal says so. Implementation creates the process and records; preparing and filing a return requires a separate period-specific calculation and approval. We can coordinate both engagements, using the implementation work to support the first filing while keeping its fee, timetable and deliverables clear.

Can an established company use this service after filing already?

Yes. The review may identify ways to improve a process that has already produced a return, especially after growth, a system change or an adviser handover. We examine current controls and define improvements. Any suspected historical filing error is assessed separately rather than being concealed within a prospective implementation project.
