Customs registration, broker authorisation or shipment clearance?
A registration number is one part of the arrangements needed to move goods.
| Requirement | What it establishes | Prepare first |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai Customs business registration | A company record and customs code for transacting with Dubai Customs. | Trade licence and the authorised person’s passport and Emirates ID copies. |
| Abu Dhabi Customs profile | A customs profile and registration number through the Abu Dhabi process. | Entity details, licensed activity and the applicable registration information. |
| Broker or clearing-agent authorisation | Permission for the appointed agent to act within the agreed customs arrangements. | The agent’s details and the business’s approval of its authority. |
| Clearance of a particular shipment | The declaration and supporting evidence for those goods and their movement. | Shipment documents and any required product or other approvals. |
Registration does not settle classification, origin, duty or product permissions; check these before relying on a shipment date.
Registration, broker authorisation and shipment clearance are different tasks; your scope identifies which work is included.
Confirm where and how the business will trade
Dubai Customs provides a business-registration service that issues a customs code, while Abu Dhabi Customs offers creation of a customs profile and registration number. We identify the relevant authority and business role before preparing the application. A registration used for one route should not be assumed to cover every port, emirate or customs activity.
Tell us whether the business will import for itself, export, re-export or use a broker, and where goods are expected to move. Those facts help distinguish the registration requirement from operational clearance arrangements and any product-specific permissions.
Check the licence and authorised-person information
The Dubai Customs service card lists a trade licence and authorised-person passport and Emirates ID copies among its required documents. We check the applicable authority’s current requirements and compare the company details with the application. Expired documents, inconsistent names or an unclear authorisation should be addressed before submission.
The agreed work can cover a new registration, review of an existing record or coordination of a relevant amendment or renewal. We record who controls the business account and who receives official notices, so access does not disappear when an employee or broker changes.
Registration is only one part of the shipment process
A customs code does not decide tariff classification, origin, valuation, duty treatment or whether goods need another approval. Shipment declarations and brokerage are separate work. Where a broker will act for you, the business needs to understand the authorisation and its limits. We can identify these follow-on tasks in the handover, while specialist advice or clearance services are agreed separately. Do not dispatch goods based only on an application reference when the required registrations or permissions remain incomplete.

How the work starts
Map the trading route
We establish the entity’s role, intended goods movements and customs authority, and distinguish registration work from shipment or product requirements.
Review the documents
We compare licence and identity records with the application requirements, identify inconsistencies and confirm the authorised business contact.
Coordinate the application
We prepare the agreed information for approval and support submission or amendment through the relevant process, recording queries and outstanding actions.
Hand over the registration
We provide the registration details or outcome and explain account ownership, update responsibilities and any remaining permissions or clearance work.
What affects the scope and fee?
- Customs authority and registration type
- New code, amendment or renewal
- Company and authorisation complexity
- Document gaps and authority queries
- Additional shipment or advisory scope
We set out the deliverables, responsibilities and fee in the proposal. Work outside that scope is discussed before it is added.
Customs registration FAQs
Is a trade licence the same as a customs code?
No. A licence identifies the business and permitted activities, while customs registration provides the relevant record for dealing with the customs authority. We check how the two connect for your proposed activity. A business should not assume that receiving a trading licence means every import or export registration has been completed.
Can one registration be used everywhere in the UAE?
The correct route depends on the authority, port and transaction arrangement. We do not assume that one code automatically covers every customs activity or emirate. Tell us where goods will enter, leave or move, and whether a broker is involved, so the specific registration and authorisation requirements can be checked.
Does this service include clearing a shipment?
Registration support does not automatically include customs declarations, brokerage or physical shipment clearance. Those tasks require separate information and responsibilities. Your proposal identifies the registration work and any additional services. We also flag product approvals or other dependencies that should be resolved before the business relies on a shipment timetable.
Will registration determine our customs duty?
No. Duty treatment can depend on the goods, classification, value, origin and the transaction procedure. A registration number does not settle those questions. If you need a duty assessment or a position on a particular shipment, that requires a separate review with the relevant commercial and product information.
What happens when company details change?
A change to the licence, authorised person or contact information may require an update to the customs record. We can review the existing profile and relevant process within an agreed amendment scope. Keep the authority correspondence and registration details accessible so a routine business change does not leave outdated information in use.
Can we apply before choosing a freight forwarder?
We can assess the business registration requirements from the proposed trading model, but the shipment route and operational responsibilities still need to be understood. A forwarder or broker may later require a separate authorisation. The initial discussion should identify who will manage goods movement, declarations and communication with the customs authority.
