Which VAT registration test applies?
Your legal status and taxable activity determine the registration test; a trade licence or bank balance cannot answer it alone.
| Your position | What to check |
|---|---|
| UAE-resident business | Mandatory registration generally applies above AED 375,000 in taxable supplies and imports over the previous 12 months, or expected within the next 30 days. |
| Below the mandatory threshold | Voluntary registration may be available above AED 187,500 in qualifying supplies, imports or taxable expenses, using the applicable period test. |
| Non-resident making UAE supplies | The resident-business threshold may not apply; establish whether another UAE party accounts for the VAT. |
| Several branches or sole establishments | Identify the legal person and combined activities before opening registrations; a separate licence does not necessarily mean a separate TRN. |
The turnover review must classify the transactions, not simply add up bank receipts.
After approval, we check the certificate and explain the first return period and records your business needs to maintain.
Establish the right registration basis
For UAE-resident businesses, mandatory registration generally applies when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months or are expected to exceed it in the next 30 days. Voluntary registration may be available above AED 187,500, including qualifying taxable expenses. Non-residents have different conditions. These are separate tests from corporate tax. See the FTA registration criteria.
We prepare a month-by-month analysis and identify transactions that need a closer look. A bank statement total is not a substitute for a turnover assessment: receipts may include loans, owner funding or transfers between accounts. Equally, issued invoices and contractual milestones may matter even before the customer pays.
Prepare an application that matches the business
Names, ownership, activities and signatory details should agree across the application and its evidence. We compare the licence and incorporation documents with the trading records, identify missing explanations and prepare the supporting schedules. Branches, sole establishments and group structures need attention before an account is created; opening extra profiles can create avoidable confusion.
You review the financial information and declarations before submission. If the FTA asks for additional evidence, we help organise a focused response within the agreed scope. The FTA decides the outcome and effective date; submitting an application does not itself mean that registration has been approved.
Prepare for the first VAT period
Once registration is approved, we review the certificate details with you and record the first return period shown in EmaraTax. We can identify invoice-template changes, tax codes and a filing calendar for your finance team. Where accounting setup or ongoing return preparation is needed, we define that work separately rather than assuming it is included in a registration-only engagement.
Resolve difficult starting points early
Tell us if sales began before the application, the business recently changed ownership or more than one licence is involved. We establish the timeline from records and assess the next steps using current requirements. Existing errors, overdue returns and penalty matters are recorded as separate issues, with the work and supporting evidence explained before you proceed.
Documents and records to prepare
Tick the records you already have. The final request depends on your entity, the period and the work agreed. Please do not send financial records through this website.

How the work starts
Assess the position
We review the legal person, activities and transaction history, then establish the registration basis and any urgent issues.
Build the application
We reconcile the supporting figures, prepare the required information and ask you to confirm its accuracy.
Submit and follow through
Following authorisation, we support submission, track requests and hand over the approved registration details when issued.
What affects the scope and fee?
- Number of entities and branches
- Quality and period of turnover records
- Non-resident or cross-border issues
- Historical registration gaps and clarification work
We set out the deliverables, responsibilities and fee in the proposal. Work outside that scope is discussed before it is added.
VAT registration FAQs
Does a corporate tax registration also register me for VAT?
No. VAT and corporate tax are different registrations with different eligibility tests. An existing EmaraTax account can be a useful starting point, but we still assess your VAT position and prepare the relevant application. Share all existing registration certificates so we can check the correct taxable-person profile before work begins.
Can I register before the business has substantial sales?
Potentially. We need to review the basis for voluntary registration and the evidence available rather than assume that every new business qualifies. Expected contracts, actual taxable expenditure and the business activity may be relevant. We will explain what the records support and where the application needs further evidence before submission.
Can Firswood help if I should already have registered?
Yes. We start with the actual trading history, including when invoices were issued and what was supplied. We then separate the registration application from any historic filing, accounting or penalty work. A late application should use supported facts; we do not alter dates simply to produce a more convenient result.
How long will approval take?
The FTA publishes an estimated processing period, but an individual application may take longer when information is incomplete or further questions arise. We agree our preparation work after reviewing your documents and keep track of authority requests. We cannot guarantee an approval date or treat submission as permission to assume approval.
What happens after I receive the VAT certificate?
We check the certificate against the application and explain the recorded effective date and first filing period. Your business then needs reliable tax invoices, records and a return-preparation process. If you want ongoing bookkeeping or VAT filing, we agree its frequency, responsibilities and fee as a separate or combined service.
