Does the change affect your profile or a filed VAT return?
Identify the record that is wrong before choosing an amendment or correction procedure.
| What changed | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Trading name, address or licence details | Current and previous documents, with evidence of when the change took effect and whether the same legal person continues. |
| Authorised signatory | Identity records and authority to act; check that the proposed signatory details match the supporting corporate documents. |
| Bank or customs information | Evidence for the specific registration detail being updated; EmaraTax may require a separate amendment route. |
| Sales figures or tax in a filed return | Keep the original return and transaction evidence for an error assessment; updating the business profile does not correct return figures. |
The FTA requires relevant record changes to be notified within 20 business days of the change.
Errors in a filed return are assessed through the separate VAT correction process.
Identify exactly what needs updating
The review begins with the existing profile and the documents that changed. We check whether the request concerns a tax-specific registration detail, bank or customs information, or the wider taxable-person profile. The FTA describes these different amendment routes in its Tax Records Amendment service.
We also check whether the documents describe the same continuing legal person. A new trading name and the creation of a new company are not interchangeable events. Where ownership, legal form or licence numbers change, the evidence should establish continuity or identify when a different tax procedure needs to be considered.
Document the change and its date
An application should connect the old record to the new one with a consistent explanation. We gather the amended licence, incorporation evidence, resolutions or signatory authority relevant to the request, and identify any missing link. Where applicable, the authority may require a continuity certificate linking old and new licence numbers. See the FTA document requirements.
The FTA states that relevant changes must be notified within 20 business days. We therefore record the actual change date rather than starting the timetable from the day the paperwork reaches the accountant. Read the amendment timing requirement. If that date has passed, we review the circumstances and any account notices before agreeing the next steps.
Check the result across the account
Before submission, you review the proposed information and the supporting explanation. We retain the application reference, track agreed clarification requests and check the resulting registration record. Some changes may involve separate applications or tax types, so we do not assume that editing one field has updated every associated registration.
After completion, we help identify practical follow-up work: invoice templates, supplier onboarding details, customs links, bank information and internal contact lists may also need revision. The engagement distinguishes the EmaraTax amendment from changes in other systems or with other authorities.
Keep registration changes separate from return corrections
A profile amendment does not correct historic VAT calculations. If the review uncovers an incorrect return, we log the affected period and evidence and propose the appropriate additional work. Keeping these issues separate produces a clearer application and prevents a registration update from being mistaken for resolution of an unrelated filing problem.
Documents and records to prepare
Tick the records you already have. The final request depends on your entity, the period and the work agreed. Please do not send financial records through this website.

How the work starts
Compare the records
We identify differences between EmaraTax and the current business documents and establish the relevant dates.
Prepare the request
We assemble evidence, choose the applicable amendment route and obtain your approval of the proposed details.
Verify completion
We follow the agreed request through review and check which records and certificates have changed.
What affects the scope and fee?
- Number and type of amendments
- Evidence needed to establish continuity
- Number of tax registrations affected
- Late changes or unresolved authority requests
We set out the deliverables, responsibilities and fee in the proposal. Work outside that scope is discussed before it is added.
VAT registration amendments FAQs
Is this service for correcting an old VAT return?
No. Registration amendments update business or registration information, such as a licence or signatory detail. A return error concerns previously reported transactions or tax and needs a separate assessment. If both issues are present, we can coordinate them while keeping the evidence, authorisation and completion checks clear for each procedure.
Do we need an amendment every time a licence is renewed?
We compare the renewed licence and registered record to establish the update needed under the current FTA requirements. Send the renewed document promptly, including any changes to activities, names or licence numbers. We also check whether the event affects other tax registrations rather than reviewing VAT in isolation.
Can a new owner continue using the same VAT registration?
We must review the legal transaction and the entity involved before answering. A share transfer, a business asset sale and formation of a new legal person can have different consequences. Provide the signed agreements and amended corporate documents so the proposed treatment reflects what actually happened, rather than the commercial description alone.
What if the change happened some time ago?
We establish the actual date, review the existing profile and check correspondence or notices already received. The appropriate response should be based on the documents and current rules. We can assist with the update, but do not promise that a late amendment will remove a penalty or resolve another outstanding issue.
Will updating VAT also update corporate tax and customs?
Not necessarily. Some information belongs to the shared taxable-person profile while other details are specific to a registration or separate authority system. We check the required routes and state which updates are included. The handover identifies any remaining changes your team or another adviser needs to make.
