What should you establish when you find a VAT error?
Record the facts before deciding how to correct the return or respond to an assessment.
| Question | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Which figures are wrong? | Keep the original return, the relevant invoices and a calculation comparing the filed and proposed figures for each affected period. |
| When was the issue discovered? | Record the discovery date and circumstances, together with any authority notice or earlier correspondence concerning the same matter. |
| Did it affect a refund or later return? | Trace the error through subsequent filings and refund requests so the proposed correction covers the connected entries. |
| Which correction route applies? | Assess the type, amount, timing and tax effect against current requirements before changing a return or submitting a disclosure. |
A zero net tax difference does not by itself establish that no correction is needed; profile changes use a separate amendment process.
We preserve the original filing history and identify the accounting or process change needed to prevent a repeat.
Establish the facts before changing a return
An unexplained difference between a VAT report and the ledger is a reason to investigate, not yet a complete diagnosis. We reconstruct the transaction history, compare filed figures with the source documents and identify whether the issue concerns output tax, input tax, period allocation or a reporting field. We preserve the original records and record when the matter was discovered.
The calculation distinguishes each affected period and the reason for the proposed adjustment. We also check whether the error flowed into later returns or a refund application. This prevents a single correction from leaving a related inconsistency elsewhere in the account.
Choose the applicable correction procedure
The Tax Procedures Law addresses errors in returns, assessments and refund applications through voluntary disclosure rules. The applicable route depends on the nature of the error and current implementing requirements; it should not be selected solely from a remembered monetary threshold. See the amended Tax Procedures Law, Article 10.
We review the amount, timing, tax impact and any authority correspondence before recommending action. Registration-detail changes belong to a different process. Matters with no apparent net tax effect still need assessment rather than an automatic conclusion that no correction is required. Where the position is uncertain, we identify the technical question and further evidence needed.
Prepare a clear explanation and calculation
A useful correction file connects the original treatment, the corrected treatment and the evidence for the difference. We prepare supporting schedules and explain assumptions that require management confirmation. You review the proposed figures before we support the authorised submission. The file retains both the original return and the correction record so the history remains understandable.
Penalties cannot be predicted from the tax difference alone. The FTA announced changes to the relevant administrative-penalty framework effective 14 April 2026, including provisions relating to incorrect returns and voluntary disclosures. We assess the rules applicable to the case rather than use outdated penalty tables. Read the FTA announcement.
Address the cause as well as the amount
After the correction work, we explain the control that would have identified the problem earlier. That could mean a reconciliation, clearer review of credit notes or a change in how unusual transactions are escalated. Historic record reconstruction, disputed assessments and formal challenge procedures are separately scoped when needed; filing a disclosure is not a promise that all associated issues are resolved.
Documents and records to prepare
Tick the records you already have. The final request depends on your entity, the period and the work agreed. Please do not send financial records through this website.

How the work starts
Investigate
We preserve the existing record, trace the issue and identify affected periods and related filings.
Assess and prepare
We calculate the supported adjustment and explain the proposed correction route and outstanding questions.
Approve and act
You approve the facts and figures before authorised submission; we retain the correction record and agree any follow-up.
What affects the scope and fee?
- Number of errors and affected periods
- Extent of missing or inconsistent records
- Complexity of the technical treatment
- Existing audit, refund or assessment activity
We set out the deliverables, responsibilities and fee in the proposal. Work outside that scope is discussed before it is added.
VAT error correction and voluntary disclosure FAQs
Can every error be corrected in the next VAT return?
No single rule covers every error. We assess the type of mistake, periods, tax effect and current correction requirements before deciding what action is appropriate. Putting an old difference into a current return without that assessment can create a second reporting problem or leave the original error inadequately explained.
What is the difference between an amendment and a disclosure?
A registration amendment updates business or registration details, such as a licence or signatory. A voluntary disclosure concerns an error or omission in a return, assessment or refund application. We identify which record is wrong before preparing anything, and keep the workstreams separate if your business needs both procedures.
Will voluntary disclosure remove all penalties?
It should not be presented as a blanket penalty waiver. The outcome depends on the facts, applicable rules and relevant timing, including authority action already taken. We explain the basis of any calculation or assessment and identify uncertainty. The FTA determines the account treatment; we do not promise a penalty-free result.
Can you help if an FTA enquiry has already started?
Yes. Send the notice and full correspondence immediately so we can understand the scope and response requirements. We assess the correction issue in the context of that active matter rather than treating it as an ordinary standalone filing. Audit-response or dispute work may require an additional agreed engagement.
What if we do not know the full amount of the error?
We first define the affected transactions and the records needed to calculate the amount. A sample finding may indicate a wider issue, but should not be reported as a final total without a supported method. We explain the reconstruction work and decision points before preparing a correction for approval.
