What created the VAT credit you want refunded?
The source of the credit determines the evidence needed before a refund application can be prepared.
| Credit or concern | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Recoverable input tax exceeds output tax | Trace the credit through filed returns, tax reports and supporting invoices; establish which periods produced the amount claimed. |
| A payment was duplicated or exceeded the amount due | Match payment references and bank evidence to the tax-account transactions before requesting repayment of the excess. |
| The ledger and EmaraTax disagree | Reconcile the difference first; check unposted payments, earlier adjustments and amounts already used against other liabilities. |
| An earlier return appears wrong | Assess the error and correction procedure before including the affected balance in a refund request. |
A credit is not an automatic cash refund. Eligibility, applicable time limits and the FTA review still need to be considered.
Approval and repayment remain subject to the FTA’s review.
Understand the balance before requesting repayment
We start by comparing the tax-account balance with filed returns, payment history and the VAT ledger. A balance may arise from recoverable input tax, an excess payment or a combination of entries. The FTA's registered-taxpayer refund service distinguishes these situations and lists the relevant supporting records. The application must describe the actual source of the amount requested.
For a business with regular export sales or significant setup expenditure, the explanation may depend on several periods. We trace that history and identify unsupported entries, duplicated claims or amounts already used against liabilities. An unexplained ledger balance should be investigated before it is presented as an amount due for repayment.
Build a claim file that supports the numbers
We review the agreed sample or population of purchase invoices, supplier details and business-purpose evidence, then reconcile the schedule to the filed returns. Where exports, property, capital expenditure or mixed activities affect the claim, we agree the additional review needed. The work distinguishes accounting expenditure from tax that meets the applicable recovery conditions.
A clear index helps the reviewer locate invoices, contracts and payment evidence without repeatedly asking for the same material. We prepare an explanation of material differences and maintain a record of documents supplied. If records reveal a return error, we assess the correction route before using those figures in a refund application.
Check time limits and follow-up requirements
Refund rights are subject to statutory time limits and exceptions. The amended Tax Procedures Law includes a five-year framework and transitional provisions affecting some older balances in 2026. We check the dates relevant to your balance rather than assume that historic credits remain claimable indefinitely. See Article 38 and its transitional notes.
We do not describe an authority's estimated review period as a guaranteed payment date. The FTA may seek more information or undertake additional review. Your engagement specifies how clarification rounds, expanded transaction testing and any work on disputed items are handled.
Use the correct refund route
This service page focuses on registered business VAT balances and excess payments. Tourist refunds, foreign-business visitor claims and new-residence refunds have different eligibility and procedures. Tell us the nature of the claim at the first discussion so that we confirm the right route and do not prepare a business refund application for a different scheme.
Documents and records to prepare
Tick the records you already have. The final request depends on your entity, the period and the work agreed. Please do not send financial records through this website.

What affects the scope and fee?
- Value history and number of periods
- Invoice volume and evidence quality
- Type of transactions supporting the claim
- Extent of FTA questions or corrective work
We set out the deliverables, responsibilities and fee in the proposal. Work outside that scope is discussed before it is added.
VAT refund assistance FAQs
Does a credit on EmaraTax mean a refund is automatic?
No. The credit needs to be reconciled and the appropriate refund request made. The FTA reviews the application and supporting information. We check the source of the balance, previous use of the credit and any gaps in evidence before preparing a claim, rather than treating the displayed amount as a guaranteed repayment.
Can we leave the credit available for future periods?
The FTA refund service describes carrying excess payments forward as an available treatment. Whether that is appropriate for your business depends on the balance, expected liabilities and applicable time limits. We explain the available route for your circumstances and reconcile the account so an old balance is not overlooked. See FTA guidance.
What if some supplier invoices are missing?
We identify the affected entries and ask for replacement invoices or other relevant records from the supplier and your finance team. We do not create substitute evidence for a transaction. The review explains which amounts remain supported, which need further investigation and how the missing information changes the proposed claim scope.
Can you guarantee when the refund will reach our bank?
No. The authority controls its review and payment decision, and may request more evidence or investigate particular transactions. We can agree preparation milestones, keep a record of requests and help you respond promptly. Cash-flow planning should not rely on an unapproved refund arriving on a promised date.
Do you handle all types of UAE VAT refund?
We first identify whether you are a registered business, foreign visitor business, individual homebuilder or another claimant category. Different schemes require different evidence and eligibility checks. This page describes registered-business refund assistance; any other scheme must be specifically confirmed and included in the engagement before application work starts.
